The Netbook Creation and Evolution
Since the creation of the laptop in around 1981, not much has changed. Obviously with advances being made, condensing the size of different parts, the laptop became more compact and faster over the years. Compact for a laptop was still a pretty good size piece of equipment ranging in size from 13 to 17 inch screens weighing from 5 to 15 lbs, making them portable enough but still not that great an option for a user that is on the go all the time. This all changed in 2007 with OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) a company, whose goal is to bring technology to developing nations, making education more efficient and more effective.
When creating this computer, OLPC knew they had a tight budget and surprisingly came up with a really cheap product that is easy to maintain, fix, repair or replace without a high price tag or complicated equipment. When OLPC released their product, they sold around 300,000 in a short time, attracting the attention of larger computer manufacturers such as Acer, HP and others. This interest led to development which led to the manufacturing and ultimately the distribution of the consumer ready netbook in a very short time. After their release, it was reported by Amazon that in 2008, netbooks were all over the top ten buying list and caused laptop sales to double from 2007-08. Netbooks took the market by storm, that is a fact and an undisputed one but the question is why.
Let’s start with initial performance. They came with the necessary components including on average a 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB – 1 GB of RAM, an optical drive, decent quality screen etc. The specs really weren’t that impressive but when you consider the fact you now have a computer half the size of a laptop with a price tag half the size as well, a computer suddenly became something many more people could afford. Also the size and weight made it a popular option for checking email, surfing the web and doing some basic document processing for the constantly on the go user. It was the combination of these things that made it such a hot sale and with technology constantly being developed; it was only a matter of time before an already good product became great.

Reliance Communications hikes call tariffs by 20 percent
Reliance Communications, a part of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group, has increased call tarrifs for its CDMA and GSM connections by 20 percent in selected circles, officials said on Sunday.
‘The tariff has been increased from 1 paisa to 1.2 paise per second in most of the circles,’ a senior executive said.
While for GSM customers the hike has been implemented on both calls made from Reliance to Reliance network as well as other networks, for CDMA customers the change will be effective only for calls made from Reliance to other networks.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Note and Wave 3 set for IFA
Samsung will roll out three new top-end devices at next week’s IFA tech trade show in Berlin: the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Note and Wave 3. How do we know? All three devices are mentioned in the company’s official IFA Android app.
The news was uncovered by This Is My Next, whose source found mention of the devices while rooting around in the recesses of the Android add-on. Sadly, there’s no word on specs, although we can safely assume the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be a reboot of the original Galaxy Tab, using Android Honeycomb.
The Wave 3 will likely pack in Sammy’s own Bada OS, just like its predecessors. The Galaxy Note, however, remains a mystery.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray preview: First look
Big is in with Android phones but the Xperia ray is eager to prove that petite smartphones have a charm of their own. All the horsepower of the Arc in a body that's a centimeter shorter both ways - think a premium saloon turned into a roadster. The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray has plenty to offer, not the least of which is an 8MP camera with HD video recording and a Bravia Mobile engine powered screen with eye-popping pixel density.
The combo Sony Ericsson have put together includes a 1GHz single core processor, 8MP camera with 720p video and screen expertise borrowed from Sony's TV department. It's the same concoction behind the Arc, the Neo, and the new Mini - now the Xperia ray.
On the face of it, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray looks like a widescreen version of the Mini, but whereas the Mini is rather chubby at 16mm, the Xperia ray clocks in at 9.4mm (despite the bigger, 1500mAh battery). The camera is an 8MP unit to keep in line with the current crop of high-end droids.
The 3.3" screen of FWVGA resolution has nearly 300ppi pixel density (the Retina display has 326ppi) and we appreciate the mobile incarnation of Bravia.
Here's what the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray has to offer to those who have been on a lookout for a compact smartphone with high-end specs.

Like Angry Birds? Try New ‘Angry Anna’ Game
To the millions of fans of Angry Birds, there comes a new game ‘Angry Anna‘. The game is inspired by the Anti-corruption movement taken up by legend Anna Hazare. You will be hitting the politicians (labelled as corrupt) by Anna Hazare and his team. You get 3 chances to clear a level much like Angry Birds.
The game is available on iPhone, iPad and Mac for installation. You can any time play the game using the browser at angryanna.com.
The game is listed at Gamesalad.
I tried playing the game and liked it. The graphics is fine and I liked the flow too. The game but seems more of a copy of Angry Birds than anything innovative, other than linking it to the current anti-corruption movement.
This is a huge applause for Anna Hazare and team. If the game succeeds, it will create a history for Indian Mobile/Online Gaming space, and take Anna to new heights, which is highly deserved.
Good luck for the team.
You may want to play the game and share your thoughts here as comments. Would love to know what you feel.

Google gets started with Southeast Asia Expansion, opens an Office in Thailand
We recently reported that Google is eyeing Southeast Asia for expansion. The search-engine giant has now taken a major step towards this goal by opening an office in Thailand, according to The Nation.
Google has appointed Ariya Banomyong, former Chief Commercial Officer of True Corporation’s Convergence as its first country manager for Thailand. Ariya will oversee Google’s sales and business-development operations in this country.
The search engine giant hosts a variety of Internet-based services and products and generates revenue mainly from advertising. The company is planning to encourage local businesses to go online successfully, and to increase online-advertising spending in the Thai market from the current level of only 0.3 per cent of total advertising spending to a level closer to that in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, which have online-advertising spending of 30 to 50 per cent.
“The number of mobile-Internet users in Thailand is expanding rapidly, having grown three-fold in 2009 and 2010 to represent about 40 per cent of all Internet users. Every day, three out of every five Thai smartphone users employ a search service. This figure is higher than that in many developed countries, including the US, the UK, Germany and Australia. And the most important key word of these mobile searches is restaurant. Through their search behavior, these people are obviously telling us what products and services they are looking for. Our mission is to help businesses to utilize and benefit from this searching,” Ariya stated.
Thailand has around 25 million Internet users, and about 40 per cent of these users access the Internet via mobile devices. Of all the counties in Southeast Asia, Thailand has the highest number of searches – 55 million per day. This makes the country a potential market for Google in Asia.

Google Dominates Web Search In The US
According to recent statistics even through mobile web searches, Google has been the dominant medium of search used throughout US. Mobile web search trends have only gone higher in recent times. Google has been taking a commanding lead in mobile searches too since its mobile web search launch.
The statistics according to Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report confirms this. About 9% of the pages viewed via mobile, Google’s search portal have repeatedly come to be popular over Yahoo and Bing. These two sites only get 4.3% and 0.03% of the hits among the other search engine pages viewed.
Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report works on to bring monthly publications about mobile search statistics in great details. They also bring you information on the best of global trends that have been influencing mobile internet in recent times. They also highlight statistics and profiles in Middle East. Their reports have concluded that in January 2010 about 50 million people have been using Opera Mini. This has been a 7.4% increase since December the previous year.
Lenovo ThinkPad T410 – A Review
The new Lenovo ThinkPad T410 is the very latest in its range of business notebooks. This 14.1 inch laptop, with its Core i5 CPU and sleek design, promises high levels of performance. The design of this particular laptop is rather nice – the sides are angularly shaped, and there is a new stylish keyboard/LCD light layout. The system, as a result, looks not only attractive but also more modern. This laptop also promises to be more durable, because of the materials used. The lid in the chassis is made from ABS plastic and a strong carbon-fiber reinforced plastic bottom. And if you are worried about your notebook getting damaged, don’t worry as there is an internal roll cage.
This laptop weighs about 5.2 pounds, there is a standard 6-cell battery, in size and weight it’s almost equivalent to the Lenovo ThinkPad T400, but this one is different in the sense that it is more compact, and far easier to carry around. This is probably due to the tapered edges as well as the plastic bottom.
You will see the ThinkPad logo on the black rubberized screen, the shiny matte-black chassis and palm rest are also there – as with previous models, and of course, the strong and visible stainless steel screen hinges are also there. But there are more ports than with previous models, and also some new types of connections. The bottom of the laptop has also changed – there is now a user-access panel which allows you to install more RAM, or even a wireless card, without having to open up your notebook.
PayPal Will Finally Be Back In India!
Lots of people all over the country will be heaving a sigh of relief as PayPal will finally be resuming their services back in India from the 3rd of March.
Thousands of people all over the country had their transactions reversed as a result of PayPal blocking all transactions coming in and out of Indian accounts. This started happening almost three weeks back with eBay.
This event sparked massive outrage and especially so on counts of racism and many other allegations that were alleged against the corporation. Last week, further developments took place as PayPal was compelled to stop all personal transactions by the Reserve Bank of India. This was because of some issues with compliance of regulations. However, things seem to be taking a turn for the better as PayPal will probably resume their services by the third of this month, and especially their bank withdrawal functions.
There will be some new rules however and now all Indian customers will have to fill in an extra detail called “Export Code” while requesting for a withdrawal. This is being done in compliance with Indian laws concerning any form of cross border financial transactions.

Mozilla to Develop OS based on android!
Mozilla, who are renowned for their successful internet browser, are entering the mobile race, developing a new web-centric OS that will directly compete with Google, Apple and Microsoft.
If the name Mozilla rings any bells it's because they're the tech boffins who put together Internet Explorer, the browser that Windows defaults to. Mozilla took the leviathan computing company on with its Firefox browser, and today it stands as the second most popular browser worldwide.
Now the company who was underdog to Microsoft looks to be playing the same role, but this time against internet mogul Google.
Announced on the Mozilla discussion forum, Mozilla have begun coding for phones and tablets. The BBC revealed the mobile operating system will draw on Android code, with Mozilla writing as much fresh code as possible. The hybrid-like operating system will be named Boot To Gecko.

Tips to keep your smartphone safe
Here are a few simple tips to keep your smartphone happy:
1. Cover up your phone
Phone screens are becoming bigger by the day, and with that the chances of ruining them with scratches have increased. So as soon as you buy your phone, spend Rs 100-300 on a screen guard. These are thin plastic films that you can stick on the display so that it doesn't get scratched. These cost as little as 50 bucks in a local market, and can cost Rs 800 if they are branded. But remember, if your phone has a capacitive touchscreen, do not use any old screen guard; buy a specialised guard or touch sensitivity will suffer. You can also get your phone laminated, which will cost barely Rs 100-200 and will protect the whole phone from moisture, dust, and scratches.
2. Be careful while pocketing your phone
Men often clumsily put their phone in their pocket along with keys, coins and many other inhabitants, while women put them in there purse where it shares space with lipsticks, combs and many other things I know of, but the phone doesn't want to share its space and will end up with a scratched body and screen, broken screen, and worst of all, broken circuits.
The best way to protect your phone is to assign a separate space for it in your pocket or purse. If you travel in a personal vehicle, you can also opt for a phone holster that can be attached to your belt (not a good idea in a crowded bus or train, for it is an open invitation to thieves). These holsters have the dual benefit of protecting your phone while protecting you from harmful radiation. If you travel in public transport, try a phone pouch.
3. Keep it the way you keep medicine
Keep it in a cool and dry place. Do not keep your phone in direct sun light and avoid keeping it on the dash board of your car, for it's very hot there due to the green house effect. The place near the gear shift is the best place in a car.
Moisture is another thing you need to avoid, so if you are sweating, don't keep your phone in your jeans' pocket. If you do accidentally drop your phone in water, remove all the detachable components immediately and let the phone dry (you can use a hair dryer for faster drying, though you shouldn't overdo it), visit a technician and get the phone cleaned from inside (don't do it yourself).
4. Dust is another enemy
Dust is another enemy of your cell phone, apart from heat and moisture. While you can't completely avoid it in India, laminating your phone and keeping it in a pouch will help. Regularly cleaning it by removing the covers and batteries and using a brush (a paint brush is a good idea) will help.
5. Do not overload your phone
Lots of apps and data in your phone will slow it down; very similar to what happens to a PC when you are running a lot of software and keep you hard disc near full. So remember to give it some breathing space by using below 75 per cent of storage space. Removing unnecessary applications just as you do on a PC is also a good idea.
Last but not least, do not attempt to make repairs by your self; technicians are best for this job.
‘Mobile phones in India to stream $350 billion by 2015’
Mobile phones will usher in a new form of payment in India — mobile money, according to a study by Boston Consulting Group.
The study titled ‘The rush to mobile money: Madness or master stroke’, estimates that by 2015, $350 billion (Rs 15,75,000 crore) in payments and banking transactions could flow through mobile phones. This would include government payments, points of sale and bill payments, banking transactions, remittances and business payments. About $235 billion (Rs 10,57,500 crore) of annual credit and debit card transactions happen in India today, out of which $215 billion (Rs 9,67,500 crore) accounted for cash withdrawals at ATMs. As of May 2011, there were 1.1 crore mobile payment users in India as compared to only 400 last year with the value of the transaction estimated to be Rs 1.6 crore.
